How to Make Roast Beef Sliders
- Split the rolls in half with a serrated knife and place the bottom buns in a large round or 13"x9" dish. On the bottom slices, evenly top in this order: provolone cheese, roast beef, Muenster, (optional sautéed onions and mushrooms), then the top buns.
- In a small bowl, whisk together melted butter, Worcestershire sauce, Everything Bagel seasoning, and 1 teaspoon of the gravy mix. Pour the butter mixture evenly over the tops of the rolls.
- Cover with aluminum foil. Bake in a preheated 350ºF oven for 25 minutes. Uncover and bake another 5-10, or until the top of the sandwiches are golden brown and cheese has melted.
- While the sandwiches bake, in a small saucepan on medium-high heat, whisk together 2 cups water and the remaining au jus mix. Bring to a boil then lower the heat to simmer 5 minutes.
- Serve the sandwiches with the prepared au jus and horseradish mayo and dijon mustard on the side.
Recipe Tips and Variations
- Homemade Everything Bagel Seasoning: This is easy to make and stores well in an airtight container up to 3 months. Here are the ingredients:
- 2 tablespoons white sesame seeds
- 1 tablespoon black sesame seeds
- 1 tablespoon poppy seeds
- 1 tablespoon dried minced garlic
- 1 tablespoon dried minced onion
- 1 teaspoon flaky sea salt (adjust to taste)
- Au Jus Gravy Mix Options: You can use a regular or low-sodium packaged Au Jus mix. You can also make it from scratch. Here the ingredients:
- 2 tablespoons regular or low-sodium beef bouillon granules or beef base
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon dried thyme
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- Meat Tips and Substitutes: Choose a high-quality deli meat for optimal satisfaction! Personally, I prefer Boar's Head Seasoned Filet of Roast Beef sliced at the deli counter. If you have leftover roast beef or prefer to make your beef from scratch, slice or chop it in easy-to-eat pieces. You can also make these with leftover sliced prime rib.
- Cheese Options: Besides provolone and muenster cheese, you can also use American cheese, havarti, mozzarella, Swiss cheese, gouda, fontina, cheddar cheese, gruyere, Monterey Jack, or pepper jack cheeses. Gorgonzola and blue cheese can add a unique flavor profile as well.
- Sautéed Veggies: Adding caramelized sweet onions and mushrooms adds volume, texture, and amazing flavors. Heat a skillet over medium heat. Add a drizzle of olive oil or a pat of butter. Once melted, add sliced onions and mushrooms. Caramelizing takes time, usually around 15-20 minutes, stirring them occasionally. Add water to the pan as they cook if needed.
What to Serve with Roast Beef Sliders on Hawaiian Rolls
Roast beef sliders are excellent as a casual dinner or as a part of a spread of yummy appetizers and finger foods. If serving as a main course, you could pair them with a simple side salad, potato chips, raw vegetables, and herb and onion dip. They also reheat well as a quick lunch the following day.
If serving as a party appetizer, a few favorites that we like to serve with them are Jalapeño Cranberry Salsa and chips, BLT Deviled Eggs, and Buffalo Chicken Dip.
Storage and Freezing
Refrigeration: Store leftover roast beef sliders in the refrigerator in an airtight container up to 2-3 days.
Freezing: For longer storage, you can freeze roast beef sliders. However, freezing may affect the texture, so it's best for shorter periods. When ready to eat, thaw in the refrigerator overnight. Reheat them in the oven for a few minutes to refresh the texture.
Reheating: Place leftovers in a baking dish and cover with aluminum foil. Bake in a preheated 350°F oven for 10-15 minutes. If you're in a hurry, you can use the microwave. However, this may affect the texture of the bread. Heat in short intervals.
