This 5-ingredient Mixed Berry Cobbler is the easiest summer dessert made with fresh or frozen berries, self rising flour, and heavy cream. It's a simple dessert recipe that's on repeat in our house almost every week in the warm weather months.

A serving of fruit cobbler on a plate.

We love this easy Mixed Berry Cobbler. Our favorite fruit is mixed berries, and during the summer we probably make this easy dessert once a week! The berries are baked into a warm and pillowy cobbler topping that's ideal for topping with ice cream.

This comforting treat is assembled in less than 10 minutes, but will taste like you spent hours making it! It's so easy, all you need is 5 ingredients that you probably already have at home. Plus, we made sure to make it extra simple by testing the recipe both with fresh or frozen berries as well as canned fruit.

    Why this Recipe Works

    • 5 Ingredient Dessert. It's so easy to make, you can assemble it in less than 10 minutes. There's no reason to not have a sweet treat with dinner.
    • Use fresh, frozen, or canned fruit. We used berries here but customize this cobbler with your favorite seasonal fruit. Frozen or canned in syrup works well too if you're in a pinch.
    • Add spices or extracts. If you want to jazz up this cobbler, add spices like cinnamon or nutmeg to the flour and extracts like almond or vanilla. All are so delicious!
    • Easier to make than pie. With similar flavors to a fruit pie, this cobbler is so much quicker and easier to make.

What is the Difference Between a Cobbler and a Crisp?

There is so much confusion always around this topic. So let's clear it up! Cobblers are topped with a cake or biscuit-like topping while crisps have an oat and sugar based topping that becomes a streusel.

Crumbles on the other hand are almost like a combination of a cobbler and crisp. They have a streusel top with no oats that uses butter, flour and sugar.

Our recipe here is definitely a cobbler with a rich and moist cake-like texture on top of the gooey berry filling, yum.

Pro Tip: If you don't have self rising flour at home, you can make it in seconds! For every 1 cup of flour add 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder and ¼ teaspoon fine sea salt.

    Ingredients

Scroll Down for Ingredient Amounts Listed in the Recipe Card Below

    • Self-rising flour: This is simply all purpose flour with baking powder and salt. If you want to make your own at home easily, just add 1 ½ teaspoons of baking powder and ¼ teaspoon fine sea salt to each cup of all purpose flour.
    • Granulated sugar: Sweetens the cobbler topping.
    • Heavy whipping cream: Gives that rich and moist cake-like texture to the cobbler.
    • Unsalted butter: Adds additional flavor and gooey texture to the cobbler.
    • Mixed berries: Use fresh berries especially in the summer or frozen or canned all year round. Both work great!
    • Whipped cream or ice cream: A must have garnish for serving.

Pro Tips for Easy Berry Cobbler

    • Measure the flour correctly. Be sure to spoon and level the flour in the measuring cup or else your cobbler could be dense.
    • No need to defrost frozen fruit. Simply add the frozen fruit to the baking dish and bake until warmed through and jammy. If you defrost prior to baking then your cobbler with be extra runny. The frozen fruit thickens as it cooks but may still be a little thinner in consistency than fresh fruit.
    • Use the Syrup. If using canned fruit such as apples, peaches or cherries, dollop the fruit on top of the dough first, then spoon the syrup evenly around the cobbler. You’ll want to use a 20-30 ounce can.
    • Use your favorite fruit. We love mixed berries here, but you can use peaches, plums, pineapple, cherries, the options are endless!
    • Customize the mixed berry cobbler with spices and extracts! You can add spices like cinnamon and nutmeg to the flour mixture, plus extracts like almond or vanilla to change up the flavors.

    Storage and Make Ahead Instructions

If you have any leftovers, simply cover with foil and set on the counter or in the fridge for up to 2 days before the texture changes. Reheat the cobbler in the microwave or oven for a few minutes until warmed through.

Making this mixed berry cobbler in advance is great. Simply measure out the dry and wet ingredients in advance in containers then mix and bake right before you begin eating dinner so it's piping hot and warm when it's time for dessert!

The cobbler can be frozen but this may slightly change the texture when it's reheated.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my berry cobbler runny?

If your fresh or frozen berries are extra juicy then this may cause the cobbler to be a little more runny. If you see this as you prep the recipe, add 1 teaspoon cornstarch to the berry mixture to help thicken the filling.

    Can this cobbler be gluten-free?

Yes, simply swap the self rising flour or gluten-free flour mix and add 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder and ¼ teaspoon salt for each cup of flour.

Can I use other fruit in this cobbler?

Yes! Use whatever fruit is in season. You can customize this dessert to your liking in any way.

How can I make this ahead of time?

We recommend just measuring out the ingredients in advance then quickly combining and baking when your ready to prepare.

I haven't tried, but I can assume it will impact the texture/flavor quite a bit if omitted. You can try substituting with a granulated sugar alternative like Swerve.
